Las Vegas-based Trio Southwest give free guest recital Feb. 6

Guest performers Trio Southwest will perform a free recital at Brigham Young University Thursday, Feb. 6, at 7:30 p.m. at the Madsen Recital Hall.

Trio Southwest includes Jennifer Grim on flute, Jason Bonham on viola and Kristie A. Smith on harp.

This event replaces the April Clayton flute recital which was posted on previously issued calendars.

Performances will include Arnold Bax’s “Elegiac Trio,” Sofia Gubaidulina’s “garten von freuden und traurigkeiten” and Milton Barnes’s “Tango 99.”

 Grim has been a featured soloist at the Vermont Mozart Festival, performing all of the Mozart flute concerti and flute quartets. She has also collaborated as a chamber artist with pianists Menahem Pressler, Anton Kuerti, Charles Wadsworth, Philippe Entremont, and guitarist Eliot Fisk. Recently, she was invited by Maestro Entremont to be Principal Flute at the Santo Domingo Music Festival Orchestra. Grim holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Stanford University and master’s degree of and doctorate in musical arts from Yale University. She is currently an associate professor of music at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

Bonham is the principal violist with the Las Vegas Philharmonic and has performed with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra, Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, Elgin Symphony Orchestra, the Fort Wayne Philharmonic and Ars Viva Symphony Orchestra. He currently is pursuing his doctoral degree in orchestra conducting at UNLV.

Smith has earned national recognition as a winner of several major harp competitions, including the Grandjany National Harp Competition, the AHS Intermediate I Division Competition, the AHS Intermediate II Division Competition, the National Federation of Music Clubs Competition, the Anne Adams Awards, the AHS Salzedo prize and the AHS Young Professional Competition.  She is now finishing her doctorate in harp performance at Indiana University. She received her master's degree from Indiana University, and she graduated summa cum laude and with honors in harp and piano performance from the University of Arizona.
