LA Times bureau chief to discuss North Korean life in lecture July 19

The Brigham Young University David M. Kennedy for International Studies will host Barbara Demick as she discusses her book, "Nothing to Envy: Ordinary Lives in North Korea," which was named the center's Summer 2012 Book of the Semester.

The free lecture will take place Thursday, July 19, at 11 a.m. in 238 Herald R. Clark Building, and the public is welcome to attend.

The Beijing bureau chief for the Los Angeles Times, Demick has been interviewing North Koreans about their lives since 2001, when she moved to Seoul for the Times. Her reporting on North Korea won the Overseas Press Club award for human rights reporting, the Asia Society’s Osborne Eliott award and the American Academy of Diplomacy’s Arthur Ross Award.

Before joining the Los Angeles Times, she was with the Philadelphia Inquirer as a foreign correspondent in the Middle East and Eastern Europe. She lived in Sarajevo during the war in Bosnia and her book about daily life, “Logavina Street: Life and Death in a Sarajevo Neighborhood,” was published in April. Her Sarajevo reporting won the George Polk Award, the Robert F. Kennedy Award and was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize.
