John Wayne in "Rio Bravo" to be BYU film series pick Feb. 24

The Special Collections Film Series at Brigham Young University's Harold B. Lee Library presents John Wayne in the classic Western "Rio Bravo" Thursday, Feb. 24, at 7 p.m. in the Lee Library Auditorium.

Admission is free and the public is welcome. Limited seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis. The doors open at 6:30 p.m. Children age eight and older are welcome. No food or drink is permitted in the auditorium.

"Rio Bravo" was written by Howard Hawks and stars the legendary Dean Martin, Walter Brennan, Ward Bond and Ricky Nelson. It was among the top ten box office hits of 1959.

"Rio Bravo" portrays the story of a strong lawman John T. Chance, his alcoholic friend and deputy who together hold off the powerful family of a man he put in jail.

The film showing is part of the ongoing Special Collections Motion Picture Archives Film Series and is co-sponsored by the friends of the Harold B. Lee Library and Dennis and Linda Gibson.

The Special Collections Motion Picture Archives Film Series is presented monthly and features motion pictures from the Motion Picture Archive in the L. Tom Perry Special Collections.

Green-thumb dynasty: BYU landscaping wins fifth national championship in six years

For the fifth time in six years, BYU students dug, pruned and planted their way to the National Collegiate Landscaping Competition title, the March Madness of college landscaping teams. BYU bested 50 other universities in the four-day event, outscoring the second-place finisher by more than 358 points and breaking the 5000-point total for the first time in the 48-year history of the tournament.
