John Braheny to appear at Invitational Songwriter Showcase Feb. 11

Songwriting suited for Nashville and Los Angeles is coming to Brigham Young University with the School of Music’s annual Invitational Songwriters Showcase Friday, Feb. 11, at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall. The concert is free.

Modeled after similar showcases at popular music destinations around the country, BYU’s event will debut student songwriters and feature guest John Braheny, acclaimed textbook author and songwriting expert.

The evening’s program will open with BYU’s best songwriting talent performing a set of student-composed works. The program will feature songs by Amy Whitcomb, Nik Day, Todd Schwartzman, Mike McClellan, Jeff Cundiff and others.

BYU’s showcase, sponsored by the School of Music’s Media Music Program, brings in prominent songwriters and figures from the industry like Braheny to give students a taste of what professional songwriting is all about.

Braheny comes to BYU as a music-industry aficionado, whose books and knowledge about the profession put him at top demand as a consultant for songwriters, performers and music entrepreneurs. Known as “the songwriter’s best friend,” Braheny co-founded the legendary Los Angeles Songwriters Showcase and continues to work as an educator, author and mentor.

“The event is a great culmination of our songwriting experience at BYU,” said Todd Schwartzman, a senior in the Media Music Program who will be performing at the showcase. “To perform in front of a guest like John Braheny will make it a great night.”

For more information, contact Ron Simpson, who is hosting the event, at (801) 422-6395 or ron_simpson@byu.edu. For more details about John Braheny, visit johnbraheny.com.
