Jazz Legacy Dixieland Band to swing at BYU Oct. 20

Steve Call will direct the Brigham Young University Jazz Legacy Dixieland Band in a night of Southern, toe-tapping music Friday, Oct. 20, at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall.

Admission will be free, and the public is welcome to attend.

The concert will combine the talents of the band and a trio of musicians performing classic Dixieland-style music. The band will perform numbers such as Phillip Braham’s “Limehouse Blues,” Hoagy Carmichael’s “Lazy River” and Fats Waller’s “Black and Blue.” Their set will also feature the traditional “Just a Closer Walk with Thee.” The group will be joined by guest artist and former band member George Bailey on clarinet.

Call, Dave Wilbur and Joshua Payne, members of the jazz trio Call Wilbur Payne, will then perform a series of time-honored favorites, including Carmichael’s “Georgia on My Mind,” Waller’s “Honeysuckle Rose” and “Ain’t Misbehavin’” and a Duke Ellington medley, featuring “It Don’t Mean a Thing (If it Ain’t Got That Swing),” “In a Sentimental Mood” and “Perdido,” among other pieces.

The Jazz Legacy Dixieland Band has performed across the country at festivals and conferences. The group features Aaron Dickens on trumpet, Call on trombone, Daniel Smith and Christian Davis on banjo, Brad Larsen on piano, Aaron Southerland and Lane Johnson on tuba, Mitch Lee on drums and Jillaine Chaston on vocals.

The Call Wilbur Payne numbers will feature Call on piano and brass, Wilbur on bass and vocals and Payne playing guitar and banjo. The group has been performing together for three years and models its style after the Nat King Cole Trio. For more information, contact Steve Call at (801) 422-6116.
