International Society meeting April 3 to consider global challenges to LDS Church

William F. Atkin to receive society’s Distinguished Service Award

Brigham Young University will host the International Society’s 17th annual conference, “International Challenges Facing the Church,” Monday, April 3, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the Harold B. Lee Library auditorium on the first floor.

Admission is free and the public is welcome. However, the luncheon and award presentation in 3220-3222 Wilkinson Student Center will cost $11.25 and reservations are required. Those wishing to attend the luncheon should RSVP by March 27 to international_society@byu.edu or call (801) 422-3377.

William F. Atkin, associate general counsel for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, will receive the society’s Distinguished Service Award.

BYU President Cecil O. Samuelson will open the conference with a brief welcome, followed by the keynote address, "International Challenges," given by Elder Donald L. Staheli, a member of the Second Quorum of Seventy of the Church.

Several other speakers will discuss such topics as “Global Health Issues Facing Church Volunteers” and “International Legal Perplexities—Religious Liberties Update,” among others.

Organized in 1989, the International Society is an association of professionals with international interests who are members or friends of the Church.

Green-thumb dynasty: BYU landscaping wins fifth national championship in six years

For the fifth time in six years, BYU students dug, pruned and planted their way to the National Collegiate Landscaping Competition title, the March Madness of college landscaping teams. BYU bested 50 other universities in the four-day event, outscoring the second-place finisher by more than 358 points and breaking the 5000-point total for the first time in the 48-year history of the tournament.
