Van C. Gessel, dean of the College of Humanities at Brigham Young University, will speak Tuesday, May 3, at 11 a.m. in the de Jong Concert Hall, Harris Fine Arts Center, for campus devotional.

Gessel has published six translations of works by the Japanese Christian novelist Endo Shusaku, including: The Samurai and Scandal; the most recent, Deep River, was published by New Directions in 1995.
He served as a literary advisor for the Milwaukee Repertory Theater's recent production of a stage adaptation of Endo's "Silence" by American playwright Steven Dietz. He is also co-editing a two volume anthology of modern Japanese Literature for Columbia University Press.
