“Hugo Chavez and Populism in Venezuela” subject of BYU lecture Sept. 26

Kirk A. Hawkins, assistant professor of political science at Brigham Young University, will present “Hugo Chavez and Populism in Venezuela” at a Global Awareness Lecture on Wednesday, Sept. 26, at noon in 238 Herald R. Clark building.

The lecture is free and the public is welcome to attend.

Hawkins joined BYU’s faculty in 2003. His research interests include Venezuelan poverty relief programs created by the Chavez Research Administration, the “Círculos Bolivarianos” organization and political parties in Venezuela. His research and articles have appeared in several national journals.

Hawkins graduated from BYU summa cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in international relations and a Spanish minor. He also earned his master’s degree in international and area studies from BYU and received his doctorate in political science from Duke University.
