“Secularization and its Discontents” will be presented at an Area Focus Lecture by Vincent P. Pecora on Thursday, April 13, at noon in 115 David O. McKay Building on the Brigham Young University campus.
In 2005, Pecora joined the University of Utah faculty as the Gordon B. Hinckley Professor of British Literature and Culture in the English Department after teaching at UCLA since 1985.
At UCLA, he had been the director of the Center for Modern and Contemporary Studies, a research center devoted to 19- and 20-century society and culture, as well as the Humanities Consortium director, which administers an Andrew W. Mellon Postdoctoral Fellowship program.
His book, "Secularization and Cultural Criticism: Religion, Nation, and Modernity," is coming out this year, and other books include "Nation and Identities: Classic Readings" (2001) and "Households of the Soul" (1997).
He has received several awards for his work, including an NEH Fellowship for 2001–02 and an Excellence in Academia Award from the Young President's Organization in 1999.
