Gary W. Mack new chair of BYU Exercise Sciences Department

Former chair Larry T. Hall new Director of Student Wellness for Student Life

Dean Rodney J. Brown of the Brigham Young University College of Life Sciences has announced that, effective Aug. 1, Gary W. Mack assumed responsibilities as department chair in the Exercise Sciences Department.

Mack replaces Larry T. Hall, who had served as chair of the department since July 2005. Hall has been appointed to the newly created position in Student Life of Director of Student Wellness.

Mack received both his bachelor of science degree in animal physiology and his master's degree in physical education from the University of California, Davis, and his doctorate in physiology from the John A. Burns School of Medicine at the University of Hawaii, Manoa.

Prior to coming to BYU in 2003, Mack completed a postdoctoral fellowship and was a successful research scientist at the John B. Pierce Laboratory at the Yale University School of Medicine in the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health.

His research focus is in the area of body fluid regulation (i.e. dehydration and blood volume regulation) and its impact on cardiovascular and thermoregulation during exercise.

Green-thumb dynasty: BYU landscaping wins fifth national championship in six years

For the fifth time in six years, BYU students dug, pruned and planted their way to the National Collegiate Landscaping Competition title, the March Madness of college landscaping teams. BYU bested 50 other universities in the four-day event, outscoring the second-place finisher by more than 358 points and breaking the 5000-point total for the first time in the 48-year history of the tournament.
