Football rivalry extends to annual 'food fight' between Cougars, Utes

Food and money drive continues through game day Nov. 22

The Brighm Young University Student Alumni Association — determined to beat the University of Utah off the ball field as well as on — will launch its annual food drive competition Friday, Nov. 7, with a food rally at Macey’s in Provo and a pancake breakfast Saturday, Nov. 8, at Legends Grill at BYU.

It is now calling upon students, faculty and community members to donate canned foods and money for local food banks.

“It is a great opportunity for BYU fans to give back to the community in a friendly rivalry between the school schools,” says Joseph R. Nance, president of the Student Alumni Association. “In this competition, everyone wins and the proceeds benefit the needy.”

The food drive takes place every November for two weeks before the big football game that pits the two schools against each other. Bragging rights are for most food gathered and most money gathered. Traditionally, BYU wins the food competition and the U the money contest.

The contest will continue through game day, Nov. 22. Cash donations are particularly welcome because a $1 donation can be translated into 20 pounds of food.

“Often businesses will give food, but monies are needed for transportation,” said Nance.

Cash donations will be accepted online at studentalumni.byu.edu. Food bins will be placed throughout campus and at Macey’s supermarket in Provo. Donations are also accepted at the Community Action Services at 815 S. Freedom Boulevard in Provo.

Dollar marks are available for purchase in the BYU Bookstore, the Creamery on Ninth, Macey’s in Provo, Costa Vida, select Crest gas stations, Deseret First Credit Union and other locations.
