First annual Mary Lou Fulton Endowed Chair Lecture at BYU April 7

Featuring playwright Steven Dietz

The Department of Theatre of Media Arts at Brigham Young University will host the first annual Mary Lou Fulton Endowed Chair Lecture featuring "Handing Down the Names" playwright Steven Dietz Thursday, April 7, at 11 a.m. in the Nelke Theatre, Harris Fine Arts Center.

Dietz will lecture on "Living History: The Playwright as a Storyteller." The public is welcome.

The Mary Lou Fulton Chair encourages and supports exemplary learning, teaching, creative work and production activity that is rooted firmly in the mission of BYU.

"Handing Down the Names" will be performed under the direction of Bob Nelson Tuesdays through Saturdays through April 9 in the Pardoe Theatre. For ticket information, visit performances.byu.edu or call (801) 422-4322.

This will be Dietz's second trip to BYU this year. He was at BYU in February to watch rehearsals and give feedback to the cast of "Handing Down the Names."

During his visit, he will join the cast of the play directly after the Thursday, April 7, performance of "Handing Down the Names" for a "Meet the Company" session with the audience, and the "University Roundtable" Panel, which will take place directly after the matinee performance Saturday, April 9, about 4:30 p.m.

Dietz's work has been staged throughout the United States at such theaters as The Old Globe in San Diego, Actors Theatre of Louisville and the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C.

His award-winning play, "God's Country," has been produced in the United States as well as in Johannesburg and Pretoria, South Africa. Dietz's other plays include "Trust," "Halcyon Days," "Ten November," "Foolin' Around with Infinity," "More Fun than Bowling," "Private Eyes," "Still Life with Iris" and "The Nina Variations."

Dietz's play "Last of the Boys" is a finalist for the 2004 American Theatre Critics/Steinberg New Play Award, one of the most prestigious national prizes for playwriting. The winner will be announced April 2, 2005, at the Humana Festival of New American Plays in Louisville, KY.
