First annual Dee R. Winterton Memorial Lecture at BYU scheduled for Nov. 13

Celebrates influential dance educator

Brigham Young University’s Dance Division will sponsor the first annual Dee R. Winterton Memorial Lecture, “Embodied Lives,” Thursday, Nov. 13, at 11 a.m. in 185 Richards Building.

Admission is free and all are invited to attend.

The lecture series celebrates the life of former BYU faculty member Dee Winterton, who influenced the contemporary dance program.

“As a faculty member, whether creating enlivening entertainment, challenging individuals to be more committed spiritually or sharing his love for movement through his exuberant performances, Dee invited everyone to be fully invested in, as Agnes de Mille says, ‘the dance,’” said Pat Debenham, associate professor of dance and the first lecturer in the series.

The purpose of the lecture is to provide a forum for the presentation of scholarship and creative work. The lecture will include aspects of simultaneously being a saint and a dancer.

Faculty member Debenham will discuss a recent trip to Mexico with BYU's Dancers’ Company, where they presented “HIStory, HERstory, OURstory: Embodied Lives” at the 16th International Oral History Conference.

The presentation will focus on how word and gesture move from the mundane to the metaphoric, and how oral histories take on new meaning when framed and transformed physically into dynamic action.
