Faculty violinist Alexander Woods plans recitals Sept. 24, Oct. 2

Alexander Woods, an assistant professor of violin at the Brigham Young University School of Music, will perform Tuesday, Sept. 24, at 7:30 p.m. with his father Rex Woods, director of the School of Music at the University of Arizona.

Woodsmusick, also featuring Alexander Woods, will perform with Andrus Madsen Wednesday, Oct. 2, at 7:30 p.m.

Both performances will be in the Madsen Recital Hall, and admission is free.

On Sept. 24, Alexander and Rex Woods will present a new violin sonata by BYU composer Neil Thornock along with Prokofiev's Violin Sonata in F Minor, a monumental masterpiece created in the environment of the intensely Stalinist Soviet Union of the 1930s. They will then be joined by Aubrey Woods, violin, and Garrick Woods, cello, for a performance of Richard Faith's “Divertimento" (2013).

On Oct. 2, Andrus Madsen, harpsichord, will join with Woodsmusick for an evening of Baroque music played on original instruments. Woodsmusick consists of Alexander Woods and Aubrey Woods, violin, and Garrick Woods, baroque cello.

Alexander Woods is a graduate of the Manhattan School of Music and Yale University where he received a master’s degree in violin performance. He has had a substantial career as a chamber musician, soloist and orchestral player in some of the most renowned venues in the world, including Carnegie Hall, Avery Fisher Hall, the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and the National Arts Centre in Canada.
