Experimental music group fEARnoMUSIC at BYU recital March 21

To perform Utah premiere of faculty composer Steven Ricks’ “Anthology”

Theexperimental music group fEARnoMUSIC will perform the Utah premiere of BrighamYoung University faculty composer Steven Ricks’ “Anthology” during a concert onthe BYU campus Friday, March 21.

Theconcert will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall, Harris Fine ArtsCenter. Tickets are $6 and can be purchase at the Fine Arts Ticket Office or bycalling (801) 422-4322.

In addition to premiering Ricks’ work, the group willperform numbers by Karlheinz Stockhausen, Mathew Burtner, Luciano Berio andOsvaldo Golijov.

The group will perform all six movements of Ricks’“Anthology,” a piece inspired by what the composer calls his “obsession” offour rock bands — Talking Heads, the Pixies, Kate Bush and Radiohead. Eachmovement is titled after albums, song titles or lyrics from these bands,including “No Fear of Music Here,” “Breathing Exercise,” “Sensual, ExoticSiren,” “All My Ghosts (5, 6, 7 . . .),” “Gigantic Wave of Bossanova” and“Alien Computer.”

“‘Anthology’ reflects my love of rock music and my ongoingattempts to translate the ideas, gestures, sounds and behaviors of that musicinto my own musical language,” Ricks said. “If you know the music of theseartists, you will probably hear some licks you recognize in my piece.”

Now in its 16th season, fEARnoMUSIC is committed topromoting contemporary chamber music, from masters of the 20th century to youngcomposers. The group has been consistently praised for its unusual andinnovative programs, offering passionate, humorous performances of the highestartistic quality.

The seven musicians who comprise fEARnoMUSIC are InésVoglar and Erin Furbee,violin; Joël Belgique, viola; Adam Esbensen, cello; MikaSunago and Jeffrey Payne, piano; and Joel Bluestone, percussion. The group willcontinue its relationship with BYU this spring, when the group will be artists inresidence at the university.

BYU’s space ace: Minor planet named in honor of Jani Radebaugh

BYU planetary geology professor Jani Radebaugh’s contributions to planetary science have reached cosmic proportions as she recently received the prestigious honor of having a minor planet named her. The asteroid, previously known as “45690,” now bears the name “45690janiradebaugh” on official NASA/JPL websites.
