Ethiopian ambassador to the United States will speak at BYU Nov. 9

Kassahun Ayele, Ethiopian ambassador to the United States, will present a Global Awareness Lecture titled “Ethiopia–U.S. Relations” Wednesday, Nov. 9, at noon in 238 Herald R. Clark Building.

Ayele previously served as minister of Trade and Industry with more than 28 years of engineering, consultancy, management and policy-related experience.

During that time, he successfully negotiated Ethiopia’s certification for the U.S. African Growth and Opportunity Act, led several successful promotional trade missions to foreign countries and traveled extensively, working with government officials, business leaders and Ethiopians residing in the United States to promote trade and investment in Ethiopia.

Ayele has actively participated in several organizations, including the Ethiopian Society of Mechanical Engineers, Ethiopian Airlines, the National Bank of Ethiopia, the Export Promotion Agency of Ethiopia, the Environment Protection Authority and the Ethiopian National Council for HIV/AIDS.

He received a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Haile Sellasie I University in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and a master’s degree in tribology in machine design from Leeds University in Leeds, England.

He has particular expertise in the planning, design, construction and operation of public water systems. That expertise has been increasingly important (and regularly sought out) in the wake of apocalyptic wildfires that have taxed those public water systems.
