English Department at BYU lists reading series authors

The English Department at Brigham Young University will host free readings for the general public at noon each Friday in the Harold B. Lee Library auditorium. The following is the list of authors scheduled for February and March:

  • Jan. 21 - Leslie Norris, author of 12 collections of poetry, three collections of short fictions, a critical biography and literary criticism, teaches at creative writing at BYU. Norris is also a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature and Fellow of the Welsh Academy.

  • Jan. 28 - Louise Plummer, author of the novel, "The Romantic Obsessions and Humiliations of Annie Sehlmeier," which was a children's choice book with both the New York Public Library and the International Reading Association, teaches creative writing and writing for young adults at BYU.

  • Feb. 4 - Joel Long, an author whose poems have been nominated four times for the Pushcart Prize, is the recipient of the Educator of Excellence Award from Writers at Work in 2002. He became the Jordan School District Educator of the Year in 2004 and has founded the Lake Effect Writers Conference.

  • Feb. 11 - Jaroldeen Edwards, author of 11 published novels in the genre of historical saga and a BYU graduate, has written both fiction and inspirational books, including "Things I wish I'd Known Sooner: Personal Discoveries of a Mother of Twelve." Edwards will both read from her work and talk about how to build a career as a writer.

  • Feb. 18 - Jerry Pournelle, author of several books centered on a fictional infantry force and co-author of two science fiction novels, has earned advanced degrees in psychology, statistics, engineering and political science. Pournelle lives in California.

  • Feb. 25 - Margaret Young, author of novels, short stories and three plays, has won the Utah Arts Council Contest in 1989 and its Publication Prize in 1990 for her collection of stories. An instructor at BYU, Young has seen two of her three plays produced at BYU. A short reception with light refreshments will follow each reading.     Making fashion out of art: Students hit the runway with designs inspired by BYU Museum of Art exhibit

    BYU students recently showcased fashion and makeup designs in a runway show at the Museum of Art. They each designed and modeled a look inspired by one of the paintings on exhibit from an art museum in Puerto Rico. On display until Jan. 3, The Sense of Beauty: Six Centuries of Painting from Museo de Arte de Ponce showcases world-class art that reflects the innate beauty of the human experience.

    A Farmer's Field of Dreams? BYU-built smart tech maps moisture levels, will adjust watering automatically

    The team of BYU engineers placed 86 Bluetooth devices throughout a 50-hectare field near Elberta, Utah, to measure water levels across every inch of the field. Placing this many sensors in a commercial field is unprecedented and allows researchers to see unique patterns that have never before been captured.
