Endowed BYU scholarship to honor retiring Intermountain Healthcare CEO

The Intermountain Healthcare Board of Trustees will honor its outgoing president and CEO William H. Nelson by endowing a scholarship in his name for nursing students at Brigham Young University.

“Bill has been a guiding force in helping Intermountain Healthcare become one of the nation’s most respected medical organizations,” said Beth Cole, dean of BYU College of Nursing. “We are honored to offer this scholarship to our nursing students.”

The nursing scholarship will help provide tuition for one student each semester. Its first recipient is David Alden.

Nelson graduated from BYU with a bachelor’s degree in accounting and earned an MBA from the University of Southern California.

“In more than 33 years at Intermountain, Bill has championed a culture of providing the best possible care — and nurses are heroes in that effort,” said Kem Gardner, chair of Intermountain’s Board of Trustees. “As a board, we felt this nursing scholarship was the most appropriate tribute we could pay to Bill and one we hope will benefit the nursing program at his alma mater BYU.”

Nelson joined Intermountain in 1975, the organization’s start-up year. He was appointed CEO in 1999.
