Elaine Walton named 2003-2004 Fulbright Scholar

A professor of social work at Brigham Young University has been named a Fulbright Scholar.

Elaine Walton will use the Senior Scholar award to continue her work researching, lecturing and studying an intervention model known as the Family Group Conference.

This intervention, borrowed from the Maoris of New Zealand, examines the involvement of the extended family in decision making and problem solving in cases of child abuse, neglect and delinquency.

Walton will be studying the model in depth during her six-month visit to New Zealand at the University of Otago.

For more than a decade, Walton has developed and evaluated family-strengthening programs in the child welfare arena. She has authored numerous publications and has made major presentations at national and international conferences.

Every year, the U.S. Fulbright Scholar Program sends 800 scholars and professionals, chosen for their leadership potential, to more than 140 countries, where they lecture or conduct research in a wide variety of academic and professional fields.
