Double Reed Society Conference at BYU to feature recitals, concerts July 22-26

Brigham Young University will host evening concerts daily during the International Double Reed Society 37th Annual Conference Tuesday through Saturday, July 22-26.

Except for Friday’s Utah Symphony performance, the concerts are free and the public is welcome.

The five-day event will commence with a Tuesday evening concert featuring several artists performing pieces by Antonio Vivaldi, Christian Ludwig Dieter and Franz Berwald in the de Jong Concert Hall, Harris Fine Arts Center, at 7:30 p.m.

A Wednesday concert will feature Robert Stephenson on the oboe and Harold Smoliar on the English horn in the de Jong Concert Hall at 7:30 p.m. Following the concert, Michael Rabinowitz will present “Late-Night Jazz” at the Provo Marriott Hotel, at 10 p.m.

The Thursday evening concert will feature Martin Schuring performing Georg Philipp Telemann and Yoshiyuki Ishikawa with a string quartet in the de Jong Concert Hall, Harris Fine Arts Center, at 7:30 p.m.

The Utah Symphony will perform classics under the stars at Deer Valley Ski Resort Friday, July 25, at 7:30 p.m. Directed by David Cho, the performance will feature double reed artists Holly Gornik, Lori Wike and Robert Stephenson. Admission for this event is $47 for students, $55 for adults and $80 for reserved seating.

To conclude the concert series, the Saturday evening concert in the de Jong Concert Hall at 7:30 p.m. will be followed by the Grand Finale Concert in the Harris Fine Arts Center Main Gallery at 10 p.m. The Grand Finale will feature a massed double reed ensemble performing “Music for the Royal Fireworks” by Handel.

BYU study finds the real reasons why some people choose not to use artificial intelligence

In a recent study, BYU professors Jacob Steffen and Taylor Wells explored why some people are still reluctant to use GenAI tools. While some people might worry about an AI apocalypse, Steffen and Wells found that most non-users are more concerned with issues like trusting the results, missing the human touch or feeling unsure if GenAI is ethical to use.
