Dean of McKay School of Education to speak Nov. 1 on kindness

K. Richard Young, dean of the David O. McKay School of Education at Brigham Young University, will speak Tuesday, Nov. 1, at 11:05 a.m. in the Marriott Center for a campus devotional.

Live broadcasts are available on KBYU-TV (Channel 11), BYU-Television, KBYU-FM (89.1), BYU-Radio and byubroadcasting.org, as well as on campus in the Joseph Smith Building Auditorium and the Varsity Theater in the Wilkinson Student Center. The title of his devotional is "Kindness, a Celestial Touchstone."

In addition to serving as dean, Young is a professor of counseling psychology and special education in the McKay School.

He has held many positions at BYU, as professor, associate dean and dean. Before teaching at BYU, he taught at Utah State University, practiced as a psychologist and edited three teaching journals. He has published two books, 30 educational products, 40 articles, as well as presented over 180 papers at conferences.

His research focuses on behavior psychology and education, specifically at-risk youth, emotional and behavioral disorders, self-management social skills development and the prevention of anti-social behavior.

He received a bachelor’s degree in psychology, a master’s degree in educational psychology and behavior analysis, and a doctoral degree in educational research and special education from the University of Utah.

Young has spent more than 30 years serving in church youth programs. He has also served as the bishop of several wards, and he currently serves as a stake Sunday School president. He and his wife, Janet Young, have eight children and 13 grandchildren.

Green-thumb dynasty: BYU landscaping wins fifth national championship in six years

For the fifth time in six years, BYU students dug, pruned and planted their way to the National Collegiate Landscaping Competition title, the March Madness of college landscaping teams. BYU bested 50 other universities in the four-day event, outscoring the second-place finisher by more than 358 points and breaking the 5000-point total for the first time in the 48-year history of the tournament.
