Dean of College of Fine Arts and Communications to speak at March 7 BYU devotional

Stephen Jones, dean of the College of Fine Arts and Communications at Brigham Young University, will speak Tuesday, March 7, at 11:05 a.m. in the Marriott Center for a campus devotional.

Live broadcasts will be available on KBYU-TV (Channel 11), BYU-Television, KBYU-FM (89.1), BYU-Radio and byubroadcasting.org, as well as on campus in the Joseph Smith Building Auditorium and the Varsity Theater in the Wilkinson Student Center. A BYU alumnus, Jones received both a master's degree and a doctorate in composition from the College-Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati.

He joined the BYU faculty in 1991, and served as an assistant dean of the College of Fine Arts and Communications from 1997 to 1999.

One of his most recent musical works, “Green Tree,” was featured at the performance “Honored and Blest Be His Ever Great Name: The Joseph Smith Bicentennial Concert" in November 2005.

His composition, "at the exactest point," was commissioned by the Chicago Symphony and enjoyed a world premiere by that orchestra in January 2004.

Jones has received commissions from the Chicago Symphony, Meadows Wind Ensemble at Southern Methodist University that premiered at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, England; the Philadanco Dance Ensemble in Philadelphia; the Utah Symphony and the Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra.

He is also a former member of the board of advisers of the Barlow Endowment for Music Composition, and has received grants from the Utah Arts Council and the Ohio Arts Council.

Green-thumb dynasty: BYU landscaping wins fifth national championship in six years

For the fifth time in six years, BYU students dug, pruned and planted their way to the National Collegiate Landscaping Competition title, the March Madness of college landscaping teams. BYU bested 50 other universities in the four-day event, outscoring the second-place finisher by more than 358 points and breaking the 5000-point total for the first time in the 48-year history of the tournament.
