David Norton to discuss "The English Word" in forum address Feb. 15

Author of "A History of the Bible as Literature"

David Norton, a professor at Victoria University in Wellington, New Zealand, will speak about “The English Word” at a Brigham Young University forum Tuesday, Feb. 15, at 11:05 a.m. in the Marriott Center.

The forum will be broadcast live on the BYU Broadcasting channels. Visit byub.org/devotionals or speeches.byu.edu for rebroadcast and archive information.

Norton’s first book, “A History of the Bible as Literature” (1993 and 2000), won the Conference on Christian Literature Book of the Year Award in 1994 for the work which “has contributed most to the dialogue between literature and the Christian faith.”

At the request of Cambridge University Press, he edited the text of the King James Version of the Bible, conforming it to the original translators’ decisions and modernizing the spelling, punctuation and presentation. Together with his “Textual History of the King James Bible,” it was published as “The New Cambridge Paragraph Bible” in 2005. The text has also been published by Penguin Books and the Folio Society.

Norton is a fellow of the Royal Society of New Zealand and of the New Zealand Academy of the Humanities. His latest book is “The King James Bible: A Short History from Tyndale to Today.”

He received master of arts and master of literature degrees from Cambridge University.
