The modern dance company Dancensemble will present its annual Winter concert Friday and Saturday, March 25-26, at 7:30 p.m. in the dance Studio Theatre, 166 Richards Building.
Dancensemble also will perform a matinee Saturday, March 26, at 2 p.m.
Tickets are $5 and are available at the Fine Arts Ticket office at (801) 378-4322. Tickets are also available at the door.
The concert, titled "Dispelling the Myth," brings to light the true nature of modern dance by resolving the misconception many have regarding the art form.
"That myth for many is that dance is serious and is only for the elite who study it. This concert is for everyone, from the novice to the sophisticated dancer," said Pat Debenham, Dancensemble artistic director.
"For a dance form that has traditionally taken itself far too seriously, this seems to be a great concert to just sit back and enjoy," he said.
Many of the dances in the concert make light of some of the oddities of everyday life. One dance uses cell phones and the odd behaviors associated with cell phones as the subject of the piece to make light of the social convenience.
The Dancensemble concert is not only a chance for students to experience the inner workings of concert production, but also it is an opportunity for the community to reassess their understanding of this vital form of communication, modern dance, Debenham said.
