"Cougars for Clean Power" week at BYU Oct. 18-22

The Marriott School of Management and the EcoResponse Club at Brigham Young University have collaborated with other organizations to launch "Cougars for Clean Power" Oct. 18-22.

Students and faculty can participate in a variety of activities on campus throughout the week that will educate and raise awareness about the economic and environmental benefits of wind power and other renewable sources.

The Wasatch Wind, Utah Clean Energy and the Utah Energy Office are working with BYU's Marriott School of Management and EcoResponse Club to establish BYU as a "Clean Power Campus."

"Universities across the country are supporting the promotion of clean energy solutions," said Sara Baldwin, outreach coordinator for Utah Energy. "Renewable energy resources have the potential to diversify our electricity supply and stimulate the economy."

The week consists of the following activities:

  • Monday - Activities in Brigham Square will begin the week with students and faculty obtaining information and making a button.

  • Tuesday - "National Energy Independence Day" will be celebrated with universities across America to draw attention to America's need for clean, reliable, domestic energy resources.

  • Wednesday - A short documentary film will follow a free screening at 7 p.m. of "The Day After Tomorrow." (Location will be announced.)

  • Thursday - Chief executive officer of Wasatch Wind Tracey Livingston and BYU's Steve Aldana will present a lecture at 11 a.m. in 250 Spencer W. Kimball Tower.

  • Friday - The week will conclude with more activities in Brigham Square. The University of Utah launched a similar effort last year, which resulted in the cumulative investment in approximately 9 million kilowatt-hours of wind power annually. Such a large-scale clean energy purchase prevents the release of nearly 9,000 tons of greenhouse gases and other pollutants and saves approximately 4.4 million gallons of water yearly.

He has particular expertise in the planning, design, construction and operation of public water systems. That expertise has been increasingly important (and regularly sought out) in the wake of apocalyptic wildfires that have taxed those public water systems.
