Classical Greek Theatre Festival to perform “Oedipus the King” at BYU Sept. 23

Westminster College and the Classical Greek Theatre Festival will perform “Oedipus the King” by Sophocles, hosted by the Brigham Young University’s Department of Theatre and Media Arts, Monday, Sept. 23, at 5 p.m. at the de Jong Concert Hall.

Tickets are $11, with $4 off with a BYU or student ID and $1 off for senior citizens and BYU alumni. Tickets can be purchased at the Fine Arts Ticket Office, (801) 422-2981 or byuarts.com/tickets. There will be a free pre-performance lecture at 4 p.m.

This classic Greek tragedy by Sophocles is directed by Sandra Shotwell and follows Oedipus’ journey to discover the source of the plague affecting Thebes, the killer of the old king Laius and the reality of his own identity. As Oedipus moves closer to the truth, the audience sees and hears Oedipus in action, his virtues and vices on display.

Through this man, hero, savior, master and tyrant, the audience members see how they, too, relate to others and to the divine.
