Christian Smith will present BYU faculty bassoon recital Sept. 20

Brigham Young University School of Music faculty artist Christian Smith will perform a bassoon recital of American music Tuesday, Sept. 20, at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall.

Smith will be accompanied by Jeffrey Shumway on piano and assisted by Geralyn Giovannetti on oboe and Scott Holden on piano.

Admission is free and the public is welcome to attend.

Selections will include compositions by American composers Alvin Etler, John Steinmetz, Peter Schickele and Jenni Brandon. With the exception of Etler, all the composers are still living.

Smith is a bassoon professor in the School of Music and served as coordinator of woodwind studies at Ricks College from 1993-1997. He had the opportunity to play under such conductors as Robert Shaw, Raymond Leppard, John Williams, Keith Lockhart and others.

He is principal bassoonist with the Orchestra at Temple Square in Salt Lake City. Smith received his bachelor and master of music degrees from BYU.

Green-thumb dynasty: BYU landscaping wins fifth national championship in six years

For the fifth time in six years, BYU students dug, pruned and planted their way to the National Collegiate Landscaping Competition title, the March Madness of college landscaping teams. BYU bested 50 other universities in the four-day event, outscoring the second-place finisher by more than 358 points and breaking the 5000-point total for the first time in the 48-year history of the tournament.
