Call for proposals for 2006 Sperry Symposium at BYU

The Sidney B. Sperry Symposium is now accepting proposals for its 35th annual symposium at Brigham Young University in October 2006.

The symposium theme, “The Writing and Compilation of the New Testament,” allows for a broad focus of topics relating to the writing of the books of the New Testament. Selected papers presented at the symposium will be published in a subsequent volume.

Suggested topics include insights from modern revelation about the writing and compilation of the New Testament, early Christian usage of New Testament passages and books, the writing of history in the New Testament world and the New Testament text as a witness of Christ.

Proposals and papers must be consistent with the doctrines and practices of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. They will be judged on the basis of their quality, scholarly content, originality and contribution to an understanding of the topic.

The symposium will feature presentations of varying lengths, and the published volume will include short papers on narrowly focused topics as well as papers of a broader scope.

A short thesis statement with an accompanying one-page outline of a plan to develop that thesis must be submitted by Oct. 3, 2005. Those submitting proposals accepted for presentation and possible publication will be notified within a few weeks of that date. Completed papers are due by Feb. 1, 2006.

Please address questions and submit proposals to Patty Smith, 271 Joseph Smith Building, (801) 422-3611.
