BYU's "Opera Scenes" to feature top student talent Feb. 18-21

Top student vocal talent from Brigham Young University’s School of Music will perform a variety of works by well-known composers during “Opera Scenes” Wednesday through Saturday, Feb. 18-21, at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall, Harris Fine Arts Center.

All tickets are $6 and may be purchased online at www.byuarts.com, by phone at (801) 422-4322 or in person at the Harris Fine Arts Center Ticket Office.

The evening will feature music by both American and British composers, including “The Mikado” and “The Pirates of Penzance” by Gilbert and Sullivan, “The Face on the Ballroom Floor” by Henry Mollicone, “Little Women” by Mark Adamo, “The True Story of Cinderella” by Warren Martin, “Tartuffe ” by Kirke Mechem, ”The Ballad of Baby Doe” by Douglas Moore and ”Porgy and Bess” by George Gershwin.

Directors for the event are Lawrence Vincent, Diane Reich, Mindy Ammons, Holly Hooper, Marilyn Smith and Joseph Olson. Accompanists are Barbara Allen and Christopher Koelzer.

Green-thumb dynasty: BYU landscaping wins fifth national championship in six years

For the fifth time in six years, BYU students dug, pruned and planted their way to the National Collegiate Landscaping Competition title, the March Madness of college landscaping teams. BYU bested 50 other universities in the four-day event, outscoring the second-place finisher by more than 358 points and breaking the 5000-point total for the first time in the 48-year history of the tournament.
