BYU's Jazz Legacy Dixieland Band plans concerts Oct. 17-18

"Seventy-six trombones" will make their mark during the Jazz Legacy Dixieland Band performances Friday and Saturday, Oct. 17-18, at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall at Brigham Young University.

Tickets at $9 with $3 off with a BYU or student ID are available through the Fine Arts Ticket Office, (801) 378-4322 or at www.byu.edu/hfac.

Founded and directed Steve Call, the Jazz Legacy Dixieland Band has performed throughout the United States and Japan and has presented a concert at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., representing Utah in the Millennium Stage State Days Concert Series.

Call said people are attracted to the toe-tapping music of Dixieland jazz because it is fun to play and fun to listen to.

"There is something very appealing about traditional jazz," he said. "It is a very happy, upbeat kind of music."

The band consists of Steve Call, director; George Bailey, clarinet and vocals; Jonathan Skarda, clarinet; Tyler Jensen, saxophones, clarinet and vocals; Daniel Henderson, trumpet and vocals; Alisha Ard, trombone and vocals; Kristen Bromley, banjo, guitar, and vocals; Jennie Bangerter, piano and vocals; Joe Jensen, tuba; and Tim Fellow, drums.

Special guests will include Russ Germer and Shannon Roberts on trombone, as well as 76 trombonists recruited from BYU and the local community.
