BYU's Irene Peery-Fox named to national music fellowship

Brigham Young University School of Music faculty member Irene Peery-Fox was recently named a fellow of the Music Teachers National Association, one of the association's highest honors.

Peery-Fox was honored at the 2003 National MTNA Conference for her distinguished service in the areas of music and excellence in teaching.

"I was so amazed, I couldn't believe it," she said. "It was one of the biggest thrills in my life."

After graduating from the Juilliard School of Music, Peery-Fox received her doctoral degree from the Peabody Conservatory of the Johns Hopkins University. She has performed throughout the United States, Canada and Europe, including a chamber recital at Carnegie Hall.

In addition to her performances, she is also a piano teacher to many students who have been winners in national and international piano competitions, including "The Five Browns," five piano-playing siblings who now study at the Juilliard School.

As a tribute to Peery-Fox, "The Five Browns" performed at the National MTNA 2003 Conference when their teacher was honored.

Peery-Fox has been on the music faculty at BYU for 23 years and has been a member of MTNA, the oldest professional non-profit music teachers association in the United States, for 25 years.
