BYU's Group for New Music plans Oct. 11 concert

Group for New Music, Brigham Young University's modern and avant-garde music ensemble, will perform "Sonic Residue--Explorations in Electronic Sound" on Saturday, Oct. 11, at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall.

The free performance will feature a variety of pieces by six composers, including faculty members Steve Ricks, Christian Asplund and Dave Madden.

"Group for New Music is kind of an ad hoc ensemble at BYU," said director Steve Ricks. "Our interest is in promoting and performing contemporary music."

Some of the music presented will involve performers playing live instruments along with or modified by electronic effects, Ricks said.

Other pieces will be manipulation of sound files in real time, creating a new musical piece on the spot.

Ricks says the audience will hear some sounds and music like they've never heard before.

"I personally think that probably all who come will come away questioning their definition of music," he said. "It is a thriving field of music that is a vital part of our society. We can't escape the influence."
