BYU's Elaine Bond named Fulbright Scholar to University of Jordan

To help establish a doctoral program in nursing

Elaine Bond, a professor in the College of Nursing at Brigham Young University, was recently named a 2006 Fulbright Scholar, allowing her to participate with the University of Jordan in establishing a doctoral program in nursing.

Sponsored by the U.S. government to increase understanding between the United States and other countries, Bond’s Fulbright work with the University of Jordan will establish the first doctoral nursing program in Jordan and the second in the Middle East.

“This opportunity for [Dr. Bond] to continue her work in Jordan could not have been more deserved,” said Elaine Marshall, dean of the College of Nursing. “Her deep commitment to her Jordanian colleagues and friends is inspiring.”

Six universities, including BYU, are aligned with the University of Jordan to help improve nursing education in Jordan and throughout the Arab world. Bond’s Fulbright award will also allow her to work with the Jordan Nursing Council to help improve the image of nursing in Jordan.

“These talented nurses work so hard to improve health care in their country,” Bond said. “I can’t describe how I feel. I love the kind, warm, hospitable Jordanian people and am honored to do my part to help them.”

Bond is the second professor from the College of Nursing to receive a Fulbright award. In 2003, Lynn Callister received the award for her work in the Russian Federation.
