BYU's Daily Universe one of nation's best college papers

The Daily Universe, Brigham Young University's student newspaper, was recently recognized as one of the top four-year college daily newspapers in the nation by the Associated Collegiate Press.

The paper was awarded second place in the annual Newspaper of the Year competition held at the National College Newspaper Convention in Las Vegas.

The Daily Universe finished behind the Daily Bruin from the University of California-Los Angeles and ahead of the Arizona Daily Wildcat from the University of Arizona.

"We're proud of the students for the work they put in to produce a quality newspaper," said Robb Hicken, managing director of the paper. "To take second place in a national competition is outstanding."

The contest was judged on-site where schools could submit papers of their choosing to the competition.

In addition to the ACP award, the Daily Universe was awarded first place for "Best all-Around Daily Newspaper" by the Society of Professional Journalists in Region 9.

The paper also won several individual and sectional awards at the SPJ conference and the Utah Press Association awards ceremony.

The awards demonstrate the quality of work within the department, said Ed Adams, communications department chair. The advertising, broadcast and public relations sequences, as well as the NewsNet online services, have all received top awards in the past four or five years.

"We are always striving for excellence in the department," Adams said. "I think it's a credit to the staff we have hired in the past four years."
