BYU's business and law schools listed in U.S. News top 50

College of Nursing graduate program ranked 58th

Brigham Young University's business and law schools are among the top 50 in the United States, reports U.S. News & World Report in its Best Graduate Schools issue. Additionally, BYU's graduate program in the College of Nursing is ranked 58th.

The J. Reuben Clark Law School is ranked 34th, and the Marriott School of Management is ranked 39th.

Two specialties within the Marriott School are also recognized by the magazine. The school's accounting specialization is ranked 16th, and the public management administration specialty is ranked 34th. "We're grateful for the ongoing recognition as a leading business school," says Ned C. Hill, dean of the Marriott School. "We're particularly happy for the additional recognition given our specialization in accounting and in public management administration."

Speaking of the students enrolled in Marriott School programs, Hill adds, "Above and beyond their professional ability, we value their strong character."

U.S. News ranks graduate programs in the areas of business, education, engineering, law and medicine. These rankings are based on two types of data: expert opinion about program quality and statistical indicators that measure the quality of a school's faculty, research and students, according to U.S. News. For the rankings in all five areas, indicator and opinion data come from surveys of more than 1,000 programs and nearly 9,100 academics and other professionals conducted in fall 2003.

Dean H. Reese Hansen of BYU's law school says he is particularly happy with the school's strong reputation among lawyers and judges. "We are also pleased to note that the academic credentials of our students rank among the very best of the other top-tier schools," he adds. "The report clearly shows that the BYU law school is among the finest in the country. We are grateful for the support of the university, the Board of Trustees, and our alumni and others which makes a legal education at BYU the best buy anywhere."

BYU's graduate program in the College of Nursing saw a significant jump last year to 58th in the U.S. News rankings, the same position it holds this year. Elaine Marshshall, dean of the college, attributes this rise to the program's students and faculty. "We are delighted to continue to be recognized in this way," she says. "Our faculty members are devoted and capable. It is an honor to be associated with such fine faculty and students. Our students enter our programs with high qualifications and graduate to become leaders in health care, in their communities and in their families."

This year in the law school rankings, Yale, Harvard, Stanford, Columbia and New York University are ranked in the top five. Among business schools, Harvard, Stanford, University of Pennsylvania, Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Northwestern University topped the list. In the graduate nursing programs, the University of Washington, University of California – San Francisco, University of Michigan – Ann Arbor, University of Pennsylvania and the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill are in the top five.

Full ranking reports are available in the newsstand book (2005 edition) "America's Best Graduate Schools" and online at USNews.com.
