#BYUDevo: "Peace I Leave with You"

Leslee Thorne-Murphy, associate English professor at BYU, spoke at the Devotional on Tuesday afternoon in the Marriott Center. Thorne-Murphy told students and faculty that while Christ's peace will not eliminate adversity in their lives; it can give them the courage and confidence they need to carry on.

Thorne-Murphy started her address by citing the scripture passage in John 14 where Christ promised he would leave his peace to his apostles, knowing they would be left alone after his death.

"I imagine there is not one soul on this earth who has not experienced adversity, who has not felt alone and troubled and afraid," she said. "Christ's gift to His apostles is certainly as available to us as it was to them."

Thorne-Murphy promised students and faculty that if they will "lean upon the Lord as they make their way through life," they will be able to "access the peace that he promised to his disciples."

"This peace rarely comes as a great and emphatic epiphany," she said. "Instead, peace suffuses our lives when we make the daily effort to invite it. When we pause, say a prayer, and invite the Lord in, He will send His peace. I know this. I know that even imperfect efforts to be charitable, humble, and long-suffering invite the Lord into our lives."
