BYU Wind Symphony, Symphonic Band plan joint concert April 5

Two of Brigham Young University’s prominent music ensembles will be joining forces in the Wind Symphony and Symphonic Band Concert Tuesday, April 5, at 7:30 p.m. in the de Jong Concert Hall. Guest artist Mark Jenkins will be performing solo on the euphonium for two of the evening’s selections.

Tickets are on sale now for $6 to $10 a seat at byuarts.com/tickets or (801) 422-4322.

The concert will begin with the Symphonic Band playing five instrumental pieces, including “The Gum-Suckers March” by Percy Aldrige Grainger and “Starry Night” by Christian Asplund.

The Wind Symphony will then perform five works, including “Fantasia di Concerto” by Edoardo Boccalari and “Die Teufelszunge” (“The Devil’s Tongue”) by Hugo Schmidt, both featuring Jenkins as a soloist.

The BYU Symphonic Band is conducted by Kirt Saville and uses a full concert band instrumentation of approximately 85 musicians. The group performs significant literature from a variety of musical periods in each concert, and they have given premieres to various works for the wind band.

The BYU Wind Symphony, directed by Don Peterson, is comprised of the finest woodwind, brass and percussion players at the university and has an extremely active concert season. In recent years, the Wind Symphony has performed in the British Isles, Taiwan, Thailand, Hong Kong, the Philippines, China, New Zealand, Australia, Finland, the Baltic States and Russia, as well as the Northwest United States and Canada.

Guest artist Mark Jenkins began his musical studies on the euphonium at the age of 11 in his home state of Nevada. He was awarded top honors at state, regional and international solo competitions, including first prize at the 1996 Leonard Falcone International Tuba and Euphonium Competition, before continuing his musical training with euphonium virtuoso Brian Bowman at the University of North Texas.  During his studies at the college of music, Jenkins was again awarded first prize at the Falcone Competition in 2000, as well as a second prize in 2001 at the ITEA Solo Euphonium Competition in Lahti, Finland.
