BYU comes in at No. 3 overall, tops several specific language categories
BYU is No. 3 in the country for producing the most graduates with foreign language degrees, according to a new analysis from The Chronicle of Higher Education.
The report published this week shows BYU is the only private institution among the Top 10. It also names BYU as the top producer of foreign-language degrees in Arabic, Russian and Portuguese. BYU comes in at No. 4 for Korean and No. 6 for French.
The Top 10 producers of all foreign-language degrees:
- University of California at Los Angeles
- University of Wisconsin at Madison
- Brigham Young University
- University of Michigan at Ann Arbor
- University of California at Santa Cruz
- University of California at Davis
- University of Washington
- Ohio State University
- University of California Berkeley
The data represents both first and second majors for bachelor’s degrees awarded in foreign languages, literatures and linguistics over the 2016-2017 academic year at four-year degree-granting public and private colleges in the United States.
Nearly 65 percent of BYU students speak a second language, with 128 languages spoken on campus. There are 62 languages taught regularly at BYU and another 30 are available with sufficient interest. BYU's Center for Language Studies offers certification in 14 languages.
