BYU students go for world record cardboard castle Monday

Students from EcoResponse, a group at Brigham Young University, will attempt to break the world record for the largest cardboard box castle on Monday, Feb. 6, at 10 a.m. on Brigham Square.

This activity will mark the kickoff for BYU's participation in RecycleMania, a nationwide college and university recycling competition. This year BYU will focus on beating the University of Utah again. In the 2011 RecycleMania competition BYU recycled 275,441 pounds while the University of Utah recycled 202,862 pounds.

BYU civil engineering students will design the castle and all other students are welcome to stop by and help build it. Those who help will receive either a t-shirt commemorating the record or a Frisbee made out of recycled plastic.

The cardboard box castle record was last set in September, 2011, by students in Kirkland House, a student dormitory at Harvard University. They constructed a castle out of 566 cardboard boxes.
