BYU student receives Andrew W. Mellon Fellowship in Humanistic Studies

Ian Lowman, a Brigham Young University alumnus, was recently awarded an Andrew W. Mellon Fellowship in Humanistic Studies.

Awarded by the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation, the one-year honor covers graduate tuition and fees, as well as a $17,500 stipend.

Eighty-five fellowships are awarded each year to seniors or graduate students pursuing a doctorate degree in humanistic disciplines.

Lowman plans to use the fellowship to earn a doctoral degree in Southeast Asian studies at the University of California-Berkeley.

He graduated from BYU in 2003 with a bachelor's degree in history and an emphasis in Asian history. He wrote his history thesis on a colonial Cambodian newspaper while working closely with professors and experts inside and outside of his field.

Lowman grew up in Jakarta, Indonesia and volunteered at an orphanage in Bogor, Indonesia.

He also studied at a language institute in Wisconsin in 2002 and worked as a teaching assistant and instructor. He has presented his research at a graduate conference and a Southeast Asian conference at UC Berkeley.
