BYU School of Music schedules free recitals Nov. 1-8

Brigham Young University’s School of Music will present several free recitals, featuring various instrumental ensembles Tuesday, Nov. 1, through Tuesday, Nov. 8.

The Honors Woodwind Quintet, sponsored by the George E. Watkins Gift for Excellence in the Arts, will perform Tuesday, Nov. 1, at 5:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall. Selections will include the Quintet No. 1 by Giovanni Giuseppe Cambini, “Three Shanties for Wind Quintet” by Malcolm Arnold and “Roaring Fork” by Eric Ewazen.

Students in the quintet auditioned for the group and received scholarships for their achievement. Coached by faculty member Christian Smith, members include Amie Reynolds on bassoon, Susan Croft on clarinet, Alicia Christensen on flute, Lucy Hall on French horn and Julia Hobbs on oboe.

Clarinet students will perform a studio recital Wednesday, Nov. 2, at 5:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall. Selections will include several sonatas by Johannes Brahms, Camille Saint-Saens, Xavier Lefevre and Alec Templeton.

Brass students will present the Brass Chamber Night Friday, Nov. 4, at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall. Selections will include such favorites as the Overture from “William Tell” by Giacchino Rossini and the “Maple Leaf Rag” by Scott Joplin, both arranged by Arthur Frackenpohl, and “The Saints’ Hallelujah” by George Frideric Handel arranged by Luther Henderson.

Trombone students will present a studio recital Saturday, Nov. 5, at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall. Selections will include “Pilgrim’s Chorus” by Richard Wagner arranged by Mark McDunn and Clifford Barnes, “Spain” from “Bass Lines” by David Fetter and “Finlandia” by Jean Sibelius arranged by Mark McDunn.

Saxophone students will present a Saxophone Chamber Night Tuesday, Nov. 8, at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall. Selections will include a ragtime suite arranged by Arthur Frackenpohl featuring such songs as “Pan Am Rag” by Tom Turpin and “The Cascades” by Scott Joplin, as well as “Joseph’s Morning Prayer” by Richard John Nobbe III.

Green-thumb dynasty: BYU landscaping wins fifth national championship in six years

For the fifth time in six years, BYU students dug, pruned and planted their way to the National Collegiate Landscaping Competition title, the March Madness of college landscaping teams. BYU bested 50 other universities in the four-day event, outscoring the second-place finisher by more than 358 points and breaking the 5000-point total for the first time in the 48-year history of the tournament.
