BYU School of Music schedules free events April 8-10

The Brigham Young University School of Music will host five free performances from Tuesday through Thursday, April 8-10.

• Under the direction of Fred McInnis and Bryant Smith, the University Bands will perform an “April Fool’s Concert—No Fools” concert on Tuesday, April 8, at 7:30 p.m. in the de Jong Concert Hall. The bands will perform several numbers, including “Liberty Fanfare” and “March from ‘1941’” by John Williams.

• On Tuesday, April 8, the evening section of University Chorale, under the direction of Paul Broomhead, will perform a variety of pieces, from African spirituals to jubilant Latin selections. The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Provo Tabernacle, 100 South University Avenue.

• The Flute Choir will present an evening of musical favorites from the 19th and 20th centuries, including John Philip Sousa’s “The Stars and Stripes Forever,” on Wednesday, April 9, at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall.

• BYU’s premiere student brass ensemble, the Honors Brass Quintet, will perform a mix of music by composers Leonard Bernstein, Victor Ewald, Derek Bourgeois and William Schuman in a concert at 7:30 p.m. in the Karl G. Maeser Building Lecture Hall on the south end of campus.

• Kelly Eisenhour will direct the BYU Jazz Voices and Vocal Jazz in a combined performance on Thursday, April 10, at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall.

BYU team helps create diagnostic tool that achieves accuracy of PCR tests with faster, simpler nanopore system

A new diagnostic tool developed by Brigham Young University and UC Santa Cruz researchers can test for SARS-CoV-2 and Zika virus with the same or better accuracy as high-precision PCR tests in a matter of hours.
