BYU School of Music to present week of free performances

As the semester draws to a close, the Brigham Young University School of Music will present a week of free performances, ranging from orchestra and string music to toe-tapping jazz.

  • Tuesday, Dec. 12 The Brass Chamber Night will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall. Participants in the concert will include the Trombone Choir, BYU Honors Brass Quintet and BYU Trombone Quartet. Among other pieces, the repertoire will consist of selections from "Porgy and Bess" by George Gershwin, "The Nanashi Quintet," arranged by Robert King and "Mosaics" by Anthony Plog.

    The de Jong Concert Hall will play host to the University Orchestra and University Strings at 7:30 p.m. The night of classic music will include "Rumanian Folk Dances" by Bela Bartók, Overture to "The Merry Wives of Windsor" by Otto Nicolai and "The Sorcerer's Apprentice," featured in the Disney movie "Fantastia," by Paul Dukas.

  • Wednesday, Dec. 13 Bart Gibb will direct the Jazz Lab Band at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall.

    Led by Paul Broomhead, the University Chorale will perform at 7:30 p.m. in the de Jong Concert Hall. The chorale will perform such pieces as "To God All Praise and Glory" by Carolyn Jennings, "Rejoice and Be Merry" by John Rutter and a set of songs from Russia, the United States and Brazil. Graduate student conductors Jacob Malczyk and Bryson Mortensen will assist in directing the performance.

  • Thursday, Dec. 14 The Honors String Quartet will light up the Madsen Recital Hall at 7:30 p.m. The quartet will perform Mozart's String Quartet in D Major, K. 575 and Dmitri Shostakovich's String Quartet No. 3 in F Major, op. 73. The quartet includes Robert Landes and John Kovalenko on violin, Gina Roper on viola and Scott Thomas Lesser on cello.

    The Trombone Ensemble will be featured at 7:30 p.m. in de Jong Concert Hall.

    Green-thumb dynasty: BYU landscaping wins fifth national championship in six years

    For the fifth time in six years, BYU students dug, pruned and planted their way to the National Collegiate Landscaping Competition title, the March Madness of college landscaping teams. BYU bested 50 other universities in the four-day event, outscoring the second-place finisher by more than 358 points and breaking the 5000-point total for the first time in the 48-year history of the tournament.
