BYU School of Music hosts free concerts Nov. 29-30

Brigham Young University’s School of Music will present three free events Tuesday and Wednesday, Nov. 29-30.

String students will present String Chamber Night Tuesday, Nov. 29, at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall. Directed by Claudine Bigelow, the performance will feature several student ensembles performing selections by Ralph Vaughan Williams, Ludwig van Beethoven, Franz Schubert and Antonin Dvorak.

The BYU Honors String Quartet will perform Wednesday, Nov. 30, at 7 p.m. in the Maeser Building Auditorium on the south end of campus. Selections will include “Crisantemi” by Giacomo Puccini and the Quartet in A minor, op. 132 by Ludwig van Beethoven. Members of the quartet include Ben Chan on violin, Mary Julia Wilson on violin, Carrie Maxwell on viola and Sharon Meilstrup on cello. This performance is sponsored by the George E. Watkins Gifts for Excellence in the Arts at BYU.

Up-and-coming student songwriters will be featured during the popular Songwriters’ Showcase Wednesday, Nov. 30, at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall. Media music majors and non-majors will perform original works in various musical styles.

Green-thumb dynasty: BYU landscaping wins fifth national championship in six years

For the fifth time in six years, BYU students dug, pruned and planted their way to the National Collegiate Landscaping Competition title, the March Madness of college landscaping teams. BYU bested 50 other universities in the four-day event, outscoring the second-place finisher by more than 358 points and breaking the 5000-point total for the first time in the 48-year history of the tournament.
