BYU School of Music continues free concerts April 4-7

Brigham Young University's School of Music will present five free concerts Tuesday through Friday, April 4-7, at locations throughout campus.

  • The Honors Woodwind Quintet will perform pieces by Poulenc and Ligeti among other composers Tuesday, April 4, at 7:30 p.m. in the Karl G. Maeser Building auditorium. The quintet is composed of Julia Anderson on the oboe, Lucy Hall on the horn, Susan Croft on the clarinet, Alicia Christiansen on the flute and Amie Reynolds on the bassoon, joined by Amalie Wickes on the piano.

  • The University Band will perform Tuesday, April 4, at 7:30 p.m. in the de Jong Concert Hall. The band will be directed by Fred McInnis and graduate student Bryant Smith. They will perform the standard band pieces “Festival Prelude” by Alfred Reed and “Symphonic Overture” by Elliot Carter. They will also perform the Symphony No. 1, “In Memoriam Dresden 1945,” by David Bukvich, depicting a fire bombing in Dresden, Germany during WWII. In contrast to the intensity of the war piece, the band will play the final movement from Maurice Revel’s “Mother Goose Suite,” depicting eternity.

  • Two flute choirs, the Silver Breeze Choir directed by Jennifer Mordock and the BYU Flute Choir directed by April Clayton, will present a concert Wednesday, April 5, at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall. Selections will include arrangements of the “Finale” from Mozart’s “The Marriage of Figaro” and Bach’s “Brandenburg Concerto.”

  • Three BYU jazz combos will perform Thursday, April 6, at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall. The Afro-Caribbean Combo will perform music of Cuba, Puerto Rico and Dominican Republic, while the Mainstream Combo will present an original piece by student Ryan Crandall. A third group, Bob Taylor’s Jazz Combo, will also perform.

  • The BYU Honors String Quartet will perform works by Mendelssohn and Shostakovich Friday, April 7, at 4:30 p.m. in the Museum of Art. Members of the quartet include Benjamin Chan and Mary Julia Wilson on the violin, Caroline Maxwell on viola and Sharon Meilstrup on the cello.
