BYU School of Music to close winter semester with series of free concerts

Brigham Young University’s School of Music will present six free musical events April 11-18 in the Harris Fine Arts Center.

  • The Jazz Lab Band, conducted by Mike Tobian, will perform jazz tunes Tuesday, April 11, at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall. The band will perform “Samantha” by Sammy Nestico featuring Kyle Davis on the alto saxophone, “Don’t Get Around Much Anymore” by Bob Russel and Duke Ellington featuring the vocals of Ellen Magelby and “When You’re Smiling” by Tom Kubis.

  • The University Strings and University Orchestra will perform Tuesday, April 11, at 7:30 p.m. in the de Jong Concert Hall. Conducted by Kayson Brown, the University Strings will present selections by Grainger, Dvořák and Rutter, while the University Orchestra, conducted by Brandon Matthews, will present pieces by Strauss and Dvořák.

  • Conducted by Will Kimball, the BYU Honors Brass Quintet, composed of Dan Barrett, Jason Bergman, Robert Davis, Randy Lee and Adam Bean, will present a concert Wednesday, April 12, at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall.

  • BYU Jazz Voices and Vocal Jazz Ensemble, directed by Kelly Eisenhour, will perform swing favorites and gospel songs Thursday, April 13, at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall. BYU Jazz Voices will perform gospel songs they performed with Gladys Knight, and Vocal Jazz will sing some jazz standards as well as “More Than Money Can Buy,” an a cappella piece with a gospel message, written by former BYU professor Bob Bailey.

  • Piano students of Scott Holden--Ryan Kelly, Amanda Nash, McKay Harline, Anna Snyder, Jennifer Jones and Ali Encinas--will perform works by Rachmaninov, Chopin, Gershwin, Debussy, Bach, Wagner-Liszt, Schumann and Beethoven Saturday, April 15, at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall.

  • The University Chorale will perform Tuesday, April 18, at 7:30 p.m. in the de Jong Concert Hall. The evening section, conducted by Paul Broomhead, will perform a new Gordon Jessop arrangement of “The Lord Is My Light,” three gospel pieces and works by Heinrich Schütz, René Clausen and Jon Harmon. Conducted by Carric Smolnik, the noon section will perform Handel’s “Your Voices Tune and Raise Them High,” Fauré’s “Cantique de Jean Racine” and Irving Fine’s “Father William” from “Alice in Wonderland.” For more information, contact Ken Crossley at (801) 422-9348.
