BYU schedules new student orientation Jan. 3

For winter semester 2004

Brigham Young University will sponsor a New Student Orientation Saturday, Jan. 3, prior to the start of winter semester on Monday, Jan. 5.

The purpose of the orientation is to combine the appropriate resources, activities and personnel to help new students adjust to college life.

Activities for the orientation include:

  • Freshman Academy meeting, 3211 Wilkinson Student Center, 12:30 to 1:50 p.m. This meeting is for those participating in Freshman Academy. Students should receive information in the mail prior to orientation.

  • Opening session, Wilkinson Student Center Garden Court, 2 to 2:25 p.m. Steve Turley, chair of the NSO executive committee, will speak.

  • K. Newell Dayley, associate vice president of undergraduate studies at BYU, will discuss the six habits of the mind that President Gordon B. Hinckley, chair of the BYU Board of Trustees, desires for all BYU students. It will be in the Wilkinson Student Center Garden Court from 2:30 to 3:20 p.m.

  • New Student Meeting, 3280 Wilkinson Student Center, 3:30 to 4:20 p.m.

  • Transfer Student Meeting, 3290 Wilkinson Student Center, 3:30 to 4:20 p.m.

  • Tradition of Honor, Varsity Theater, Wilkinson Student Center, 4:30 to 5:20 p.m. This entertaining presentation, done by the Student Honor Association, emphasizes the need for the Honor Code.

  • Dinner, Wilkinson Student Center Garden Court, 5:30 to 6:20 p.m.

  • Information booths, during dinner. Various campus entities, including Dining Services, Financial Aid, Honors, Signature Card/Meal Plans, Student Employment and College Advisement, will have booths in the Wilkinson Student Center terrace where students can ask questions or discuss concerns. College representatives will also be available for advice and information about academic majors. Students and parents can register online.     BYU professors using game-changing strategies to prevent injuries, promote wellbeing in youth athletes

    BYU professor Matt Seeley created the Strong Youth Project after watching all five of his children participate in youth sports. While he loves the many invaluable benefits of youth sports, he laments that his children often miss family activities for practice or face pressures to compete in sports during the offseason. These concerns have fueled his collaboration with professors from disciplines across BYU’s campus to improve organized sport experiences for youth, parents and coaches.
