BYU schedules Fourth Annual Social Work Conference Oct. 9

Brigham Young University’s School of Social Work will host the Fourth Annual School of Social Work Conference, “Research and Clinical Perspectives in Social Work Practice,” Friday, Oct. 9, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the BYU Conference Center, located at 770 E. University Parkway.

The conference will feature theoretical and practicalinformation to practitioners who wish to apply specific techniques in their work with individuals, families and children.

Registration is $50. If purchased on or before Friday, Oct. 2, registration is $25. Continuing education credits are available. For registration and a complete schedule of conference proceedings, visit swevents.byu.edu.

The invited scholars are Jack M. Richman, professor and dean at the School of Social Work at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; Kirk Strosahl, co-founder of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and an expert on managing depression and suicidal behavior; Tamera Smith Allred, an award-winning writer and mental health counselor in private practice in Vancouver, Wash.; and Judy Norman, BYU associate professor in social work.

Lecture topics include "Intervention Research: Responding to the Gap Between Knowledge Building and Social Work Practice" and "Crossing the Chasm Between Basic Research and Clinical Practice: The Example of Relational Frame Theory and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy.” In addition to the lectures, three workshop sessions will be offered.

Green-thumb dynasty: BYU landscaping wins fifth national championship in six years

For the fifth time in six years, BYU students dug, pruned and planted their way to the National Collegiate Landscaping Competition title, the March Madness of college landscaping teams. BYU bested 50 other universities in the four-day event, outscoring the second-place finisher by more than 358 points and breaking the 5000-point total for the first time in the 48-year history of the tournament.
