BYU schedules events marking Martin Luther King Day Jan. 20

Brigham Young University will host two Martin Luther King Day events on Monday (Jan. 20).

The BYU Black Student Union, Multicultural Student Services, Student Life and BYUSA will sponsor a candlelight walk, the "Walk of Life," commemorating the dream of Martin Luther King, Jr.

The public is invited to attend the walk, which will begin at 5:30 p.m. at the BYU Carillon Bell Tower (east of the Marriott Center) and proceed to the Wilkinson Student Center.

The Fourth Annual Martin Luther King Community Outreach Day will be conducted from 8:30 a.m. until 2 p.m. in the WSC Ballroom.

The Jacobsen Center for Service and Learning is sponsoring the event. Students from BYU and Utah Valley State College will be able to register to participate in service projects. Registration is from 8:30 to 9:15 a.m. in the WSC Terrace.

"Community service enriches a BYU education," said Carolyn Lee, organizer of Community Outreach Day. "Church and school leaders encourage us to balance learning with service and to contribute to the community. Participating in Community Outreach Day is a perfect way to show the responsibility we are taking in our community."

Following registration, James Tekulve Vann, president of the BYU Black Student Union, will speak at a devotional in the WSC Ballroom. Along with his remarks, a video highlighting the life of Dr. Marin Luther King, Jr., will be screened and the BYU Black Student Union Choir, directed by Rob Foster, BYUSA president and vice president of the Black Student Union, will present a musical number.

The remainder of the day will focus on service projects such as gathering supplies for the Church Humanitarian Aid Center, painting toy cars to be distributed to children all over the world in conjunction with The Happy Factory, learning disaster-relief training from the American Red Cross and visiting assisted-living homes, interviewing residents about life experiences and then composing short narratives about their lives to compile on Provo City's Web site.

Groups and individuals may pre-register in the Jacobsen Center, 2330 WSC, until Friday (Jan 17). For more information, contact the Center at (801) 422-1277.
