BYU professor receives New York fellowship

Matthew Mason, an assistant professor of history at Brigham Young University, has been awarded a research fellowship by the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History. Mason will conduct research at the New York Public Library. His project title is “The Doughfaces: Northern Men of Southern Principles in U.S. Politics, 1819-1865.”

Mason graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor of arts degree in history from the University of Utah and a Ph.D. in history from the University of Maryland. He received a New Faculty Research Grant at BYU and an Excellence in Teaching Award from the University of Maryland. He is the author of “Slavery and Politics in the Early American Republic,” published by the University of North Carolina Press in 2006.

The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History awards short-term fellowships for postdoctoral scholars, doctoral candidates and independent scholars, including journalists. The Gilder Lehrman Fellowships support research in five archives in New York City.
